Das gerollte Brot ist außerdem von der trockenen Sorte - aber das bin ich mittlerweile gewöhnt. Alles andere ist jedoch richtig gut: Tomate und saure Gurken, Zwiebel, viel frische Petersilie, ein Bisschen scharfe Soße und eine echte arabische Tahina, die sowohl von der Konsistenz als auch vom Geschmack her (Sesampaste, Zitrone, Knoblauch, Wasser) einfach perfekt ist. Auch wenn die faden, aufgewärmten Kugeln das Bild trüben, freue ich mich über die gelungenen Beilagen.

In das trockene gerollte Brot hineingeschmiert werden zunächst eine Mangopaste und eine rote, sanft scharfe Sauce, die sich sehr gut ergänzen. Die Kugeln sind gut gewürzt. Die Beilagen sind eher langweilig: Tomate, Gurke, Blattsalat - alles etwas grob geschnitten. Nachdem die Rolle kurz im Toasteisen warmgemacht wurde, wird der Inhalt mit einer würzig-pikanten Joghurtsauce übergossen. Die Kombination der unterschiedlichen Geschmäcke klappt überraschend gut.

Und schon wieder bin ich in Mitte. Das Adonis sieht von außen klein aus, allerdings ist im länglichen Lokal nach hinten ziemlich viel Platz, und der Hinterraum mit seinen Pflanzen und Sitzgelegenheiten wirkt gemütlich. Der junge Mann am Tresen ist sehr freundlich, unterhält die Stammkunden und bietet mir einen Tee an. Die Falafelkugeln werden auf Bestellung frisch fritiert - geht aber schnell.

Das Brot ist so geformt, dass es gefüllt zu einer geschlossenen Tasche wird, und ist dabei frisch und nicht zu dünn wie gewöhnliche Rollfladen. Dann wird es kurz im Toasteisen heiß gemacht. Beim Reinbeißen stelle ich erstaunt fest, was alles drin ist: Tomate, saure Gurken, Salat, Kraut, Petersilie und Minze, und bei allem schwingt der Hummus mit. Bei jedem Biß offenbart sich ein neuer Geschmack - alles frisch und harmoniert hervorragend. Nur von der Tahina habe ich kaum etwas gemerkt und merke mir, beim nächsten Mal nach mehr zu fragen. Einziges Manko - die Kugeln sind zwar frisch, aber etwas fad und wurden bei mir etwas zu lange fritiert. Und trotzdem - das ist mein neuer Favorit in Mitte.

Im schicken nördlichen Mitte, neben Ateliers und Galerien geschickt gelegen, spricht das Fanous hippes Publikum an. Die Einrichtung des kleinen marokkanischen Imbisses wirkt angenehm aufgeräumt, auf orientalischen Sitzkissen lehnt man sich an die Wand. Aus den Lautsprechern rieselt - wie es sich in Mitte wohl gehört - elektronische Musik.

Viel Kundschaft ist hier nicht und die Konkurrenz ist zahlreich. Die Falafelkugeln (drei) müssen also erst fritiert werden - geht jedoch schnell. Anschließend wandern sie mit Kohl, Eisbergsalat und Tomate in ein kleines gerolltes Brot - mehr würde auch nicht reinpassen. Im Toasteisen wird das Brot warm gepresst. Die Kugeln sind wirklich sehr lecker, innen grün mit viel Petersilie und viel Knoblauch. Die Beilagen sind knackig frisch, und als Sauce gibt’s statt Tahina eine gelbe saure, wohl nordafrikanische Flüssigkeit - auch sehr lecker.

Das ganze ist jedoch zu klein, und ein Brot, was schon im frischen Zustand nicht weich ist, wird durch Aufwärmen auch nicht viel besser.

Nicht nach der Frische, sondern nach der Straße benannt ist dieser bekannte Falafelimbiss im Herzen von Tel-Aviv (Dizengof Ecke Frishman). Es ist meistens viel los und die wenigen Sitzplätze vor der Theke sind meistens besetzt. Es ist ein warmer, früher Abend im November. Die Menschen unterhalten sich lebhaft, aber ich muss mich ja auf den Inhalt meiner Pita konzentrieren.

Der gesprächige Betreiber füllt eine perfekt weiche, aber standhafte Pita. Die mit etwas Knoblauch gewürzten Kugeln sind innen grün und selbstverständlich frisch aus der Friteuse. Die Pita wird innen mit Hummus bestrichen, hinzu kommt etwas Sauerkraut, Tomaten und Tahina auf die Kugeln. Oben drauf gibt’s noch eine knusprig fritierte Blätterteigrolle mit Kartoffelfüllung (”Zigarre”). An der Selbstbedienungstheke (die hab ich in Berlin vermisst!) habe ich noch die Qual der Wahl zwischen brennend scharfen Soßen, vier Sorten Kohl (rot, weiß, sauer, gelb eingelegt), eingeletem Rettich, scharfe Pepperonis, Petersilie, saure Gurken und rohe Zweibeln (gibt’s in Israel oft, auch zum Hummusteller). Nach der Hälfte der Pita stehe ich wieder auf und lade ein Paar Beilagen nach.

Lediglich die Kugeln sollten etwas knuspriger sein, denn mit zunehmender Dauer wird die Masse im inneren der Pita etwas zu weich. Aber selbstverständlich hält die Pita alle Strapazen brav bis zum Ende durch.

Nach einem sonnigen Morgen am Strand gehe ich, frisch geduscht und Badehose in der Hand, eine Falafelbude testen, die mir empfohlen wurde. Ja, liebe Berliner Imbisse, diese Woche werdet ihr von mir verschont, denn ich berichte direkt aus meiner falafeltechnischen Heimat (und von einer Tastatur ohne Umlaute). Vom Strand kommend laufe ich die Gordon St. runter und biege dann links ein in die Dizengof St. Dort steht der kleine, unscheinbare Imbiss “Badichi” angeblich seit 53 Jahren fuer kompromislose Falafelqualitaet. Das soll ihm ein Berliner erst einmal nachmachen. Vor dem kleinen Lokal stehen nur zwei Plastikstuehle, Falafel ist ja eigentlich was zum mitnehmen.

Die kleinen Kugeln aus Kichererbsenmischung sind heller als in Berlin und schon fertig (aber noch richtig warm). Die runde Pita wird innen mit Hummus bestrichen, mit den Kugeln prall gefuellt, dazu klein geschnittene Tomaten und Gurken (israelischer Salat) und Sauerkraut. Die perfekt bissige, fluessige Tahina tue ich mir selbst drauf. Optional gibt’s noch rohe Zwiebeln und Radiesschen, eine scharfe Sosse und Pepperoni, die so scharf sind, dass ich sofort Schluckauf kriege.

Was soll ich sagen: Die Pita ist perfekt frisch - weich und standhaft, das Gemuese schmackhaft, der Hummus geschmeidig und die Tahina, wie gesagt, perfekt. Nur die Kugeln koennten fuer meinen Geschmack etwas mehr Wuerze vertragen, und etwas mehr Auswahl im Buffet wuerde auch nicht schaden.

An einem eher häßlichen Abschnitt der Skalitzer Straße, aber unmittelbar an der U-Bahn-Station Görli gelegen, befindet sich seit einigen Monaten das Räj, ein schlichter Imbiss mit bequemen Sitzmöglichkeiten. An dem Lokal bin ich schon sehr oft vorbei gelaufen, aber angezogen hat es mich nie. Heute nach der Arbeit nehme ich mir bewußt vor, den Laden endlich zu testen.

Leider ist das flache Brot trocken, der Rest aber lecker. Gut gewürzte Kugelmischung (kam da eine Mikrowelle zum Einsatz? Ich bin mir nicht sicher), frischer Kopfsalat, Tomate und eingelegter Rettich. Zu der guten Standardsoße (die ich leider nicht wieder erkennen kann - Tahina war das jedenfalls nicht) gesellt sich noch eine leckere Knoblauchpaste. Mit einem ordentlichen Brot wäre es was geworden.

Im Al Kalif kann man zu gut gelaunter arabischer Musik in einem kuschelig traditionellen Hinterraum, im hellen Imbiss oder auch draussen auf der Bergmannstraße unterschiedliche orientalische Gerichte probieren. Wir aber haben es mal wieder eilig und freuen uns, dass die Kugeln schon fertig sind.

Das runde Pitabrot wandert zuallererst kurz in die Mikrowelle, bevor die Kugeln reingelegt werden. Dadurch wird es zu weich. Zu den Kugeln gibt’s fast nur Eisbergsalat, allein die frische Minze-Joghurt-Soße kann über die Einfallslosigkeit hinweg trösten. Aber in der Gegend ist die Konkurrenz hart, und das wird nicht reichen.

Den vielleicht schnellsten Falafel im Prenzlauer Berg bekomme ich bei Falafel Ufo, ein kleiner Imbiss auf der Kastanienallee Ecke Oderberger. Innen wie außen unscheinbar, sind die schlichten Holztische draußen eine alternative im Sommer. Aber der ist ja vorbei.

Die Kugeln liegen schon fertig am Topfrand, das runde flache Brot ist schnell gefüllt und wird noch kurz warmgepresst - in weniger als einer Minute habe ich mein Sandwich in der Hand. Die Kugeln sind gut gewürzt, aber das Brot ist von der trockenen Sorte und die Tahina ist eher sauer als bissig. Von Salat kann kaum die Rede sein. Insgesamt eher mittelmäßig - die Gegend hat Besseres zu bieten.

Tassili ist ein kleines neues Restaurant, das Gerichte aus den arabischen Ländern Nordafrikas serviert. Die schlichte Einrichtung ist in angenehmen, warmen Erdtönen gehalten. Neben traditionellen Gerichten wie Cous Cous, Tajine (gut!) und Suppen, kann man hier auch Hummus und Falafel bestellen. Der überaus freundliche Inhaber am Tresen macht sich dann daran, die Gerichte frisch zuzubereiten.

Leider muss man sich für einen Falafel doch zu sehr gedulden. Das Ergebnis kann sich aber sehen lassen: grüne Kugeln aus Fava Beans, frischer Salat, viel Humus, eingerollt in einem nicht kleinen Fladenbrot. Ohne Tahina fehlt es jedoch an Biss, und bei dem Salat könnte man sich noch was einfallen lassen. Wenn der nette Mann weiterhin alleine Bedient, werden Eilige enttäuscht, die sich auf die Schnelle einen Falafel holen wollen. Aber wer Zeit zum Hinsetzen hat, kann hier lecker essen.
